Best AI for Google Drive: Claude vs Gemini for Small Teams
A thread on r/AI_Agents this week asked a question many small teams have. Your files live in Google Drive. Should your AI assistant be Gemini or Claude?
Here is the short answer. If your team already pays for Google Workspace and mostly wants search and quick summaries inside Drive, start with Gemini. It is already there. If you want the assistant to do a fixed job with your files, like review a contract or write a one-page brief the same way every time, pick Claude and add skills.
This post does not promise you hours saved. Nobody has measured that for your business. It shows what each side does, and five free skills that make Claude do real work with Drive files.
Gemini vs Claude for Drive at a glance
| Gemini in Drive | Claude with the Drive connector | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Inside Drive, Docs and Sheets | In the Claude app, you add files from Drive |
| How you get it | Part of Google Workspace plans | Google Drive connector in Claude |
| Permissions | Your Google account access | Mirrors your Drive access, per Claude's help page |
| Repeatable jobs | Prompts you type each time | Skills: one file of instructions, reused |
| Best for | Find a file, summarize it fast | Fixed outputs: reviews, redlines, briefs |
Plans and limits change often. Check Google Workspace pricing and Claude's Google Drive help page before you pay. Claude's page says it reads Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, images and Office files, and you cannot see a file you could not open yourself.
How we picked
The top guides for this search compare Gemini with paid knowledge tools. Few cover Claude, and none show a skill you can open and use today. We kept skills with a license and a public file, picked for jobs a small business does with documents. Every claim below comes from that file.
You like Google's tools: keep NotebookLM, drive it from Claude
NotebookLM connector is for teams who want both. It drives NotebookLM from Claude Code through the Claude Chrome extension. It can create a notebook, add URLs, files or pasted text as sources, and start a mind map, audio overview or briefing doc.
You can chain steps: "Create a notebook called Q4 Suppliers, add these 3 URLs, then generate a mind map." It returns a checklist of done steps and a link to the notebook.
Catch: no Chrome extension, no skill. The file says there is no fallback.
Job 1: review a contract from Drive
Contract Review takes the contract text, your role and the contract type. It returns key terms in a table: fees, renewal, termination, liability cap, IP and confidentiality. Then it flags clauses, each with a suggested action: negotiate, accept, query or get legal advice.
It also lists clauses that are missing for that contract type. Every review ends with a plain English summary and a note that it is not legal advice.
Try it: add the supplier contract from Drive, then ask "Review this supplier agreement. I am the buyer."
Job 2: mark up a document like an editor
Word Doc Tracked Changes asks for the document, the review type and your role. It returns a redline: the original paragraph, the same paragraph with deletions and insertions marked, and a clean version. Margin comments flag issues without forcing new wording.
Use it on a policy, an offer letter or a proposal before it goes out.
Job 3: turn a long report into one page
Executive Summary writes the page your partner or investor will actually read. It puts the bottom line first, then minimum background, then three findings and the action needed. You set the audience and the length limit, such as one page or 500 words.
Try it: add last quarter's report from Drive and ask for a one-page summary for your co-founder.
Job 4: stop pasting the same context
Professional Brain keeps a local brain/ folder of plain markdown files: context, decisions, assumptions and people. Each fact carries a tag that says where it came from, such as [data] or [verbal].
Writes are approval-gated. It shows what it will append and waits for your yes. Nothing is overwritten. It suits an owner who explains the same business background in every chat.
