Can AI agents handle complex customer support issues, or do most end up with a human?

Asked on Reddit r/AI_Agents · rewritten without usernames ·

I am looking at AI agents for customer support, especially tools that answer calls and chats and also assist human reps during live conversations. Supporting the team rather than replacing it sounds right. In practice, can these agents handle the harder issues, or do customers still get transferred to a person most of the time?

Expect a split, not a takeover. Agents do well on questions with a clear answer in your docs or one system lookup: order status, password resets, plan changes, how-to questions. Anything that needs judgment, an exception to policy, or several systems at once still tends to reach a person.

So measure it on your own tickets before you buy. Take a few hundred recent ones, sort them by type, and see which types the agent resolves end to end. That share is your real automation rate, and it is usually lower than the vendor demo suggests.

The handoff decides whether customers like it. When the agent escalates, the human should get the conversation, what was already tried, and the customer's account details, so nobody has to repeat themselves. Make escalation easy to trigger, including when the customer simply asks for a person.

Assisting reps is often the safer first step. Suggested replies, knowledge lookups and call summaries help on the hard tickets too, while a human still owns the answer. Start there, then let the agent close the simple categories it has shown it handles well.
