Can an MCP server handle weekly app attribution reports on real client data?

Asked on Reddit · rewritten without usernames ·

At an agency, pulling install and revenue numbers for a dozen app clients every Monday takes half a day. I want account managers to just ask an AI assistant connected to our attribution platform's MCP server. Does this hold up on real client accounts, or will row limits and timeouts lead the model to report numbers it made up?

It is practical, but not as an open-ended "just ask" box. The failure you are worried about is real: when a query times out or a result is cut off at a row limit, a model can still write a confident sentence, and nothing in the answer tells the reader the data was incomplete.

The fix is to make the Monday report a fixed procedure rather than a free question. Same clients, same date range, same metrics, same breakdowns each week. Ask for small, aggregated queries per client instead of raw rows, so you stay far below the limits, and have the assistant print the exact query and the row count next to every figure.

Then add one rule that matters more than any prompt: if a call fails, times out or comes back partial, the report says so for that client and leaves the number blank. A blank cell with "query timed out" is useful. A plausible guess is worse than nothing, because account managers will send it on.

Before you trust it, run the new process in parallel with the manual one for two or three weeks and compare the numbers line by line. Once they match, keep a quick spot check of one or two clients each week rather than reading every line.
