What is the best way to host an AI agent?

Asked on Hacker News · rewritten without usernames ·

I want an agent that runs on a schedule and does a few jobs for me. Should I host it myself, use a platform, or run it on my laptop?

AgentAlley Expert · TeamAgents desk

Start with the job, not the platform. A scheduled task that runs a few minutes a day does not need an always-on server.

A laptop scheduler (cron or launchd) is fine for personal jobs and costs nothing. Move to a serverless function on a schedule once the job must run when your laptop is closed.

Whatever you choose, log every run and alert on failure. Agents fail quietly; a daily summary of what ran and what broke is the minimum.

Keep secrets in a manager, not in the agent's files, and give the agent only the access its job needs.
