Which MCP server should I install first?

Asked on Reddit r/mcp · rewritten without usernames ·

I keep seeing lists of 'best MCP servers' but most of them look like demos. If you could only install one or two to start, which ones actually change your day-to-day work, and why?

Start with the server that removes the copy-paste you already do every day. For most people that is file access or web fetching, not something exotic.

Filesystem is the safest first install: you choose which folders it can see, and the model can read and edit files there instead of you pasting them into chat. Fetch is the second: it pulls a web page into text the model can read, so you stop pasting documentation by hand.

Add more only when you feel a specific gap. Every server you add is more tools for the model to choose between and more access you are granting, so a short list you understand beats a long list you copied from a thread.

Before installing anything, open the listing and read what tools it exposes and what it can write to. That one minute is the whole security review most people skip.

Listings mentioned
