Are there free MCP servers that work with ChatGPT, not just Claude?
Most MCP guides assume Claude Desktop. I mostly use ChatGPT. Which free MCP servers can I actually use there, and is the setup different?
MCP is an open protocol, so a server does not belong to one chat app. What differs is the client: each app decides how you add a server and whether it supports local servers, remote servers, or both.
The reference servers from the Model Context Protocol project are free and open source. Simple ones like Fetch or Time are good for checking that your client setup works before you add anything that touches your files or accounts.
If your client only accepts remote servers, a local server (one that runs on your own machine) will not show up until you run it behind a remote endpoint. Check your client's own docs for which kind it accepts before blaming the server.
Whatever the client, read the tool list on the listing first. A free server can still ask for broad access.
