Is there anything that gives better value than a Codex or Claude Code subscription?

Asked on Reddit · rewritten without usernames ·

I pay for a coding agent subscription every month and use it a lot. Are there other AI products at a similar price that give more for the money, or ways to get more out of the plan I already have?

Value depends on how you use it, so measure before you switch. Note for a week or two how often you hit usage limits, which tasks you run, and which of them needed the strongest model. Plans and prices change often, so compare against the current pricing pages rather than a thread from months ago.

Most people get more value from changing habits than from changing products. Use smaller, cheaper models for routine edits and searches, keep the strongest model for planning and hard bugs, start fresh sessions instead of dragging huge contexts along, and give the agent a clear plan so it wastes fewer turns.

If your usage is uneven, compare a subscription with pay-as-you-go API billing. Heavy daily use usually favours a flat plan; occasional bursts can be cheaper on usage-based billing. Some people keep a plan for daily work and an API key for overflow.

Whatever you choose, keep your instructions and project rules in plain files in the repo. That way switching tools later costs you an afternoon, not a month of rebuilding your setup.
