Are we getting worse at structuring our own thinking because AI does it for us?
I now ask AI to outline, break down and organize almost everything before I start. The results are good, but I have noticed I struggle more to structure a problem on my own. Is this a real effect, and how do you use AI without losing that skill?
It is a fair worry. Any skill you stop practising gets weaker, and breaking a messy problem into parts is a skill. If the model always produces the outline, you get the result without the practice.
The simplest fix is to change the order. Write your own rough structure first, even five bullet points in two minutes, and only then ask the model. Ask it to criticise your outline rather than replace it: what is missing, what is in the wrong order, what you assumed without checking.
Keep a few tasks AI-free on purpose, usually the ones closest to your core work. For the rest, compare your outline with the model's now and then; the gaps show you which kind of thinking you are skipping.
Used this way, the model works as a sparring partner instead of a ghost writer, and you keep the skill while still getting the speed.
