What does a realistic day of working with AI agents look like?

Asked on Reddit · rewritten without usernames ·

Online it can sound like everyone has agents running their whole day, while my own use is mostly asking questions in a chat. What does a practical daily workflow with coding agents look like, and what step might I be missing?

Most people who get steady value from agents are not running dozens of them. They run one or two, on clearly scoped tasks, inside a loop they repeat every day: plan, let the agent build, review, and write down where things stand. The step people usually miss is the plan, not the agent.

Before the agent touches code, have it write a short plan from the requirements: the steps, the files involved and how each step will be checked. Reading a one-page plan takes two minutes and catches the wrong approach before it costs an hour of edits.

After the agent says it is done, review the change as you would review a colleague's: does it do what was asked, is anything untested, did it touch files it should not have. Agents are confident about finished work, so the review is where your judgment adds the most.

At the end of a session, have the agent write a handoff note with what is done and what is open. The next morning starts from that note instead of from memory, which is what makes the daily loop actually daily.
